- What occurred
- The 1844 rebellion against Santa Anna was in response to his perceived tolerance of violence and organized crime. Detractors of Santa Anna accused him of taking a part in gambling and cockfighting while Mexico City was experiencing a tremendous amount of violence and crime. People in Mexico City rioted and tore down statues and pictures of Santa Anna. They took his prosthetic leg and dragged it around the city.
